We entered a small room at the top of the stairs, a guard held out his hands while the other kept us covered with his weapon. “Give me your guns” he said. I reached into my pocket very slowly, withdrew my gun and handed it to him. He turned to Pixie “now you” he demanded. She withdrew her gun then shot him in the face. The other guard turned the barrel of his weapon towards her and I leaped at him knocking it into the air as it went off. Pixie had dropped her gun to the floor and looked dazed.
“Pixie!” I shouted “Get the door!” thankfully she registered this and slammed it shut while I continued to wrestle with the guard. “Help” I shouted. But Pixie had gone again. I kneed the guard in the groin, then head butted him twice. Shouting in pain he twisted away desperate to escape me, but still holding on to the gun.
I knew that any minute now more men would be crashing through the door. I twisted the gun barrel as hard as I could, the guard was completely of balance now. I grabbed the other gun and fired countless bullets into his twitching body. As the corpse dropped to the floor I fired a few shots through the door and heard a cry of pain.
“For fuck’s sake Pixie!” I roared, trying desperately to snap her back to her senses. She threw herself behind me and we both lunged for cover behind a wall. The door burst into splinters under sustained fire from the men outside, although no one was stupid enough to come rushing in. I fired a quick warning burst around the wall. Pixie was franticly trying to open the only window in the room, but it would not shift.
I fired off a few more shots then grabbed my gun, “Out of the way” I shrieked to Pixie then shot out as much of the window as I could “Go, go” I ordered Pixie. She threw herself head first through the shattered remains, that just left me.
I peered around the corner just in time to see two men creeping along the wall, while another three hovered in the doorway. I fired blindly with the guards weapon until it clicked empty. I reached into my bag and pulled out the precious bottle of vodka, with a piece of my t shirt I made a Molotov cocktail, light it then threw it towards the doorway. It exploded when it hit the wall by the men covering some in flames, their screams filled the room, without daring to think I followed Pixie through the window.
I closed my eyes as I passed through, my entire body tensed for whatever landing I faced, this turned out to be Pixie who was then struggling to regain her feet. We both collapsed on the floor, managing to disentangle ourselves just in time as a face appeared at the window above. The face was quickly followed by a gun, I dragged Pixie by her hand, and we raced for a nearby alley.
Perhaps raced is not the most accurate of descriptions, we limped adrenaline leaving our bodies, shock slowly sinking in at we had done and just survived. “Pixie, here rest here” I gasped pulling her into the welcoming shadow of a large doorway.
“Oh shit Fallen, what are we going to do? I just killed someone, killed them!” Pixie shouted at me the collapsed into tears hugging herself and rocking slowly back and forth.
What could I say? What could I do? I frantically searched my pockets for the package, which I found after a brief moment of panic. I resisted the urge to throw it away and tried as best I could to pull myself back together. I light a cigarette with a shaky hand and wrapped Pixie up in my arms.
I know it sounds wrong but it was one of the best moments of my life. It was then I realised I loved her.. I held her so tight I thought she would break, smelt her hair and mumbled incomprehensible meaningless words.
After a while she unfolded her arms and we broke apart, she looked me in my eyes, hers still filled with tears…. And I moved my lips closer to hers…. When a car appeared at the bottom of the alley beeping its horn, the driver waving their arms at us. Without thinking I pulled Pixie up and we limped towards the car, its headlights like a beacon of hope.
Without even looking at the driver I opened the door and Pixie collapsed into the back seat. I slid in the front and was finally able to get a look at the driver.
“Hi” she greeted me extending a hand to shake “Everyone around her calls me BB, seems to me you in a world of shit, wanna lift?”
I took her warm hand, smiled and said “That would be rather nice, mind if I smoke?”
She laughed and handed me one of cigarettes, “So? Where you want to go? Make it quick, there appears to be some rather angry armed fuckers just behind you!”
“Shit” I yelled as I turned and with horror noticed some of Kings guards running toward us. “Just drive!” I shouted ducking down as low as possible “Just drive”
And with a squeal of tires on road, that’s what BB did, heading even deeper into no mans land.
